A world without barriers
We are a transdisciplinary university extension project, developed by the Postgraduate Program in Portuguese Language and Literatures at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas), which aims at promoting the interaction and social emancipation of children, youngsters and adults, in situations of refuge and migration, in Brazilian society, through educational, artistic and cultural actions. Since its inception in 2018, the project has assumed the values and dynamics of an intercultural learning community and strives to add academic-scientific efforts to meet the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs), proposed by the United Nations for 2030.

“LER for me is typically a welcoming project, where we receive the greatest affection in the world. The teachers and their assistants are very wise, affectionate and polite. I can say that many things I have achieved here in Brazil are thanks to the Project. They care about us as if we were their children, I have no words to thank the team for everything they have done for me. I love this passion project.”

“I believe that LER is a very complete project, where more than teaching Brazilian culture and its language, it teaches us to develop ourselves further. It is a project where we can all express our concerns in different ways, without fear, because the answer you will have will lead you to a good learning experience. I would recommend this project, because here you will feel included, there is no difference because you are from another country, you will be totally welcomed and you will feel at home. Thank you to all the creators of this beautiful project and, mainly, to my teachers, for their dedication and simplicity in explaining everything.”

“For me, LER is a very important project in my life. It helps me a lot: to talk properly, to write correctly, and I also learned a lot about verbs, music and culture in Brazil. The teachers are very polite and affectionate, respecting each one's differences. Thank you so much for everything you've taught me. I hope you keep it up. Congratulations to you.”

“When I signed up for the course, I wanted to learn more about the Portuguese language, to speak and write to communicate better, in addition to getting to know more about the Brazilian culture. But over time I saw that it wasn't like that, it wasn't simply a language course, nor a course just to improve one’s Portuguese. And that's how every Wednesday night became a meeting place to share experiences, and a very innovative learning style, a space where each class became a family for many of us.”
